We all do certain things better than others. T.I. seems to be better at making music pre-prison rather than post. Makes no sense. Logic and history would tell us otherwise. The King of the South went out on top, releasing Paper Trail to radio and critical appeal, just before serving a sentence for unregistered machine guns. His hits kept him relevant, but upon his release, T.I.’s new material fell flat. He has yet to match the success of “Live Your Life” or “Dead and Gone” and as his upcoming LP King Uncaged continues to be pushed back, it was seeming as if Tip was falling off. Then, this Friday, he was sentenced to 11 months for violating his probation and “Get Back Up” was leaked. It’s easily his strongest single since Paper Trail, and features T.I. what he learned to do best — apologize, seem vulnerable, and take a critical look at himself and his surroundings. Chris Brown can share the sentiment, and lends a lot with a little presence on this one.
