The Benchmark

There was a time in the not so distant past when the music world reflecting on Usher’s dominance as a thing that had passed. His 2008 album “Here I Stand” did feature the smash hit “Love in This Club,” but the overall married-man tone didn’t fit him well. Marriage didn’t either, apparently, as the R&B king divorced his wife after a little less than two years together. Born anew, Ursh released an album this year “Raymond v. Raymond” (what could that possibly be alluding to?) and struck the scene at the best possible moment. Trey Songz is in-between CDs, Chris Brown is still piecing together his comeback (“Dueces” is a huge step), and when someone like Jason Derulo is rattling off hits, well, that’s prime climate for an Usher takeover. “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home),” “Lil Freak,” “OMG,” “There Goes My Baby,” “Hot Toddy,” and “DJ Got Us Fallin In Love” make six singles since the discs May 26 release. Rank them how you may, but Usher Raymond proved this summer he’s still got it. That collection of fun, nostalgic records we all love to reminisce over just got a healthy addition.

Anything with King Hov is gonna get my pick, sorry.
