The August issue of GQ happened to be their comedy issue, and a tremendous read front-to-back. In it, there were many interviews with many funny people, including a round table discussion with film makers John Landis, Edgar Wright, Judd Apatow, Todd Phillips and Adam McKay about what is and isn’t funny. The comedic visionaries all agreed that animals are almost always funny, but when you give them human voices, things change. “Animals talking are very rarely funny,” McKay said early on. Allow me to present exhibit A: “Marmaduke.” There isn’t much to say about this kiddie film about a talking Great Dane, except perhaps some witty analogy about how it’s like dog crap.
